Today I’m going to share a great breakfast shake recipe with you. Shake, smoothie, blender drink. Call it whatever you want. Just know that it’s very delicious, and it’s good for you too.
Don’t buy premade smoothies at the store – you can make your own at home for less money and you know exactly what is in it. Premade smoothies usually have fillers, preservatives, and other unwanted ingredients in them.
All you need is a good blender and a few ingredients and you’re on your way to a great way to start the day (or whenever you want it).
My Breakfast Shake
- A cup or so of Vanilla or Plain Almond Milk
- Mixed frozen fruit – in this shake I used peaches, pineapples, mango, strawberries, and blueberries (I don’t measure, I just toss it in)
- One ripe banana
- A few dashes of cinnamon – or several if you really like cinnamon
- Two to three large handfuls of baby spinach – I have found that baby spinach has a much more mild flavor, so you don’t taste it AT ALL
I blend together the first three ingredients an then I add in the cinnamon and spinach last.
Optional Add-Ins
- The possibilites with these shakes are limitless, but here are some great add-ins you can try.
- Natural peanut butter or other natural nut butter
- Nuts (I like almonds best)
- Cacao nibs
- Protein powder – if I add in protein powder it’s unflavored rice or pea protein
- Kale – sometimes I use kale instead of spinach to get a different source of greens
- Various frozen fruit – I generally use a combination of mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries), but use whatever you like
The great thing about these breakfast shakes is that they are full of antioxidants, and not to mention the fact that you’ll get several servings of fruits and veggies all at once. Also, they sit well on the stomach and don’t leave me feeling weighed down. That’s why I prefer to have shakes before I train.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.
